Product Review: RadioShack Projection Clock Radio (12-591)
This is a general review of the RadioShack Projection Clock Radio 12-591. The clock itself is automatic setting, via the Fort Collins Colorado Atomic Clock. In most cases, attempting to gain this feature in daylight hours is futile, especially the far East and West coasts, where (reflective) fringe coverage is relied upon, as the signal is AM. Usually will sync up at Midnight, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5AM, until successful, or stops trying after 5am. The reception of this signal is very good, as it even pulled it it at the far end of a room, away from windows. There will be days, farther away for the signal, it’ll just not work. AM signals are tough to maintain at long distances. The clock comes with two displays, the primary being a backlit LED screen, which when placed on an elevated surface, does not show up well, or is invisible, and the second being the projector, which displays the time, or radio station playing. The projector’s claim is it can be seen easily in broad daylight, and in my test, using ambient and CFL equivalent 120 watts of light, to see if it can do as promised. It has three settings of Auto, Medium, and Full, which does the job very well, and still readable, even right next to the bright light source. As stated before, the main display is not easy to see at lower eye-level (at or below it’s plane), but very visible above. They easily could’ve designed the lens to allow a more direct view. Fortunately, the projector takes care of that issue. The projector can …

This is the unboxing of the RadioShack Projection Alarm Clock Radio 12-591. This is replacing the current RCA alarm clock, which randomly does not sound the alarm (just sounds the amplifier noise, which is very low).

1980s Soundesign DIGITAL clock radio alarm and snooze operation
Wait for it… alarm at 1:02! My camera doesn’t do justice to just how obscenely *LOUD* the “foghorn” alarm on this clock radio is. It sounds as if all the filter capacitors suddenly failed and it’s just feeding raw AC to the speaker. I used it one morning and it woke me up in a panic, so I devised a more permanent method of hitting the Snooze button.
